High School Lesson Plan
City Poster Design
Students will research poster design through Milton Glaser and Emory Douglas. They will explore the five essential elements of poster design: Readability/Hierarchy, Contrast (shape, color, scale, line), Balance, Call to Action, and Typography. Students will encounter various poster design approaches in their “Do Now” activities daily. Afterward, students will read Italo Calvino's The Invisible Cities. They will create four thumbnail sketches and develop first drafts for peer review. Using watercolor, they will explore different techniques and incorporate influences from Emory Douglas or Milton Glaser. One class visited the Poster House to learn about posters and view Lester Beall’s collection.
Logo Rebranding
Students will learn about the various types of logos and how brands create their identities using design elements. They must bring in everyday items (excluding electronic devices) and come up with three keywords that represent each item. Students will use these keywords to design a logo for their items, incorporating their unique styles.
Package Design
Students will examine how products are packaged daily and how this affects the environment. Based on their research, students will design environmentally conscious packaging, sketch their ideas in two dimensions, and create the dielines (blueprint) to bring them into three dimensions.
Typography with Firefly (AI)
Students will use the Firefly (AI) app to learn how to create a prompt suitable for changing the type into texture or an object. They will explore various prompts and understand the pros and cons of using AI generative tools.
Printmaking Unit
Students will learn various types of printmaking, experiment with different materials, and understand the planning process with a trial-and-error approach.
