Elementary Lesson Plan
Superpower
Logo Design
Students will first learn about design. What does design mean, and what kind of designers do we see in our daily lives, such as fashion designers, industrial (furniture) designers, architects, and graphic designers? Today, students will become graphic designers and learn about logos, using superhero icons as examples. Through the observations, students will see how we can design icons/logos using a representation of animal symbols, letters, or imagery. The designs are simple, not too detailed, and portray the meaning to the audience using 2~3 colors.
Big Wave Printmaking
Students will learn essential printmaking terminology and processes in this unit. They will connect their ELL class’s storybook, “Amos & Boris,” with the Japanese woodblock print “The Great Wave off Kanagawa.” Using Styrofoam as their plate, students will create two-color prints layered on top of one another and understand the steps of printmaking, including the trial-and-error aspects of the process. Like the artist Hokusai, who changed his name thirty times during his career, students have created their artist names for this printmaking project.
Camouflage
By integrating art and biology, students will discover how color plays a crucial role in the lives of animals and insects in nature. For example, we will closely observe animals and insects that can camouflage themselves in their habitats to protect against predators. Students will explore and create representations of these animals, making close connections and observations to identify elements that reflect their habitats and environmental adaptations. Additionally, they will learn the critique process and various methods while investigating the scientific principles of adaptation and camouflage to inform and develop their work.
